Solid gold vs. sterling silver grillz

Both are real, solid metal cast from your own impression. The right one depends on how often you will wear it and how much upkeep you want.

The short answer

Choose solid gold if you plan to wear the grill regularly and want a piece that does not tarnish. Choose sterling silver if it is your first grill, you want a bright white look, or you want to find out how often you wear one before committing to gold. Both are made to order at Customized Grillz, and neither is plated.

Durability and upkeep

Gold is the lower-maintenance metal. It does not tarnish, so a quick rinse and a soft brush after each wear is all it needs. Karat is a trade-off rather than a ranking: 10K is harder and takes daily handling best, 18K is richer in colour and softer, and 14K sits in the middle and is the most ordered.

Sterling silver is a genuine precious metal and wears well, but it tarnishes in air, and moisture speeds it up. That is a cleaning routine rather than a defect: a polishing cloth brings it back in a minute.

Look and finish

Gold comes in yellow, white or rose, in polished, matte or brushed finishes. Silver gives a bright white polish and can also be given a black rhodium or oxidised finish, a look gold cannot produce.

If you want a white metal with no upkeep at all, platinum is the alternative, and it is available on the silver and platinum grillz page.

What drives the price

Gold costs more than silver because it uses more expensive metal, and within gold the karat sets the step: more pure gold by weight means a higher cost per tooth. Tooth count, design and stones then scale the total on either metal.

Because every order is built from your own design, there is no fixed list price. Send your design and tooth count for a free quote on each metal side by side.

Which one for which buyer

First-time buyers: start with silver, or order a single tooth in 10K gold. Both let you find out how a grill feels before you commit to a bigger set.

Daily wearers: 10K or 14K solid gold grillz take handling best and never need polishing.

Stone-set pieces: both metals can be stone-set; see diamond and stone-set grillz for settings.

What both share

Both are cast from an impression of your own teeth, which is what stops a grill rocking or pinching, so the first thing we send is a mould kit with spare putty and prepaid return postage. Both are removable jewellery, never bonded to a tooth, and both come with the same free mockup within 24 hours and about 2 weeks of production for plain metal.

The verdict

Wear it often and keep it: solid gold, 10K or 14K.

First grill or a bright white look: sterling silver.
